Welcome to the McMaster Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship Program.

We are pleased to offer a one-year program that will train future Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons. The Fellowship experience provides a robust clinical exposure which incorporates the latest in surgical techniques and technology in a level 1 trauma center. In addition, as McMaster University is known internationally for expertise in Evidence Based Care, our graduates receive exceptional training in research methodology and critical appraisal. It is this combination of exceptional clinical care and cutting-edge research that provides our Fellows with a unique and unparalleled training experience.

 

Program Overview

  • McMaster University is pleased to offer a Pediatric Orthopaedic Clinical Fellowship to provide Clinical Fellows with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to be leaders in the field of Pediatric Orthopaedics. The Fellowship offers comprehensive care of the pediatric orthopaedics including trauma, spine, hips, feet, and sports.
  • The fellow will have a great opportunity to gain special advanced training in hip preservation, complex spine deformities, pediatric trauma, pediatric sports (Hip arthroscopy, knee arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy, and ankle arthroscopy), and pediatric foot and ankle conditions.

Entry Requirements 

Clinical Fellows are trainees who have written their certification exam and successfully obtained specialty or subspecialty certification in their discipline.

Clinical Fellows must hold a certificate of registration authorizing independent practice or postgraduate education from the CPSO, obtain CMPA coverage, and meet all requirements to obtain hospital privileges. 

 

Certification Outcome

The successful completion of the fellowship will grant a Fellowship McMaster Certification.

 

Application Deadline 

January of the prior year (18 Months in prior to Fellowship start date).

 

Funding 

  • McMaster University has a policy of no self-funding.
  • International Fellows are required to be fully funded.

  • Goals & Competencies
    • Upon completion of training, it is expected that the Fellow will be proficient in:
  1. Evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders of childhood.
  2. To understand how factors such as diagnosis, family, and psychosocial dynamics relate to orthopaedic decision-making and the formulation of treatment plans.
  3. To contribute to the field of pediatric orthopaedics through clinical activities, research, and teaching.
  • Length of Training

    • Weekly preoperative Indication Rounds.
    • Weekly Pediatric Trauma Rounds.
    • Weekly Sports Rounds.
    • Weekly Orthopaedic Surgery Grand Rounds.
    • 2-4 days in operating room.
    • 2 days in the clinic.
    • Monthly Fellows Journal Club.
  • Overview
    •  The fellow will attend 2-4 OR sessions per week, 2 outpatient clinics.
    •  The fellow will participate in on call duties, assist with ward duties and surgical aftercare of inpatients.
    •  Protected research time is available

  • Overview
    • Our Fellows enjoy weekly protected research time if required.  Fellows will gain significant training with respect to research methodology during their training.
  • Research Opportunities
    •   Research opportunities are available in pediatric foot, trauma, sports, hips, and spine.

 Fellows are expected to complete at least one manuscript for peer review publication.

Applying

  • Application open 20 months prior to fellowship start date (November 1st of preceding) 
  • Application deadline is 18 months prior to fellowship start date (January 1st)
  • Interviews, for those invited, will be conducted 16 months prior to start date (February)
  • Interviewed candidates will be notified by mid-March approximately 15 months prior to start date
  • As McMaster University has a strict policy of no self funding, we are only able to accept fellows that will come with funding. Although the policy states it is program specific, Orthopaedics does not accept self funding.
